Magnetic properties of Lake Lisan and Holocene Dead Sea sediments and the fi delity of chemical and detrital remanent magnetization

چکیده
We have studied the magnetic properties of wet and dry late Pleistocene Lake Lisan sediments and the Holocene Dead Sea sediments. Our initial prediction was that the properties of both would be quite similar, because they have similar source and lake conditions, unless diagenetic change had occurred. Rock magnetic and paleomagnetic experiments revealed three stages of magnetization acquisition. Our fi ndings suggest two magnetic carriers in the Holocene Dead Sea and wet Lisan sediments: titanomagnetite and greigite. The titanomagnetite grains are detrital and carry a detrital remanent magnetization (DRM), whereas the greigite is diagenetic in origin and carries a chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) that dominates the total natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of Holocene Dead Sea and wet Lisan sediments. The magnetization of dry Lisan sediments is a DRM and resides in multidomain (MD) grains. We propose that magnetic properties of the Lisan Formation and Holocene Dead Sea sediments can be explained by a model that incorporates dissolution, precipitation, and alteration of magnetic carriers. At the time of deposition, titanomagnetite grains of varying size were deposited in Lake Lisan and the Holocene Dead Sea, recording the geomagnetic fi eld via a primary DRM. Sedimentation was followed by partial or complete dissolution of titanomagnetite in anoxic lake bottom conditions. As the kinetics of dissolution depends upon surface area, the single-domain (SD) grains dissolved faster, leaving only the larger pseudo-single domain (PSD) and MD grains. Titanomagnetite dissolution occurred simultaneously with precipitation of greigite in anoxic, sulfatereducing conditions probably related to bacterial degradation of organic matter. High-resolution record of geomagnetic secular variation from Late Pleistocene Lake Lisan sediments (paleo Dead Sea)
We measured geomagnetic secular variation in Lake Lisan sediments (paleo Dead Sea). More than 1500 oriented samples were collected from a 27.3-m section of alternating aragonite and detritus laminae in the Dead Sea basin ranging in age from 67 to 32 ka. The natural remanent magnetization (NRM) is carried by titanomagnetite in the detrital laminae whereas the aragonite is diamagnetic. The NRM is...

Extended Abstract: 1-Introduction There is a direct relationship in evaporative deposit with the changes in the depth of the lake. Therefore?, valuable information is gained regarding the causation of changes in environment over time. Evaporite minerals formation is a natural phenomenon accruing in water-bodies containing deferent mineral Since sulfate is abundant in seawater and saline lakes...
متن کاملGypsum as a monitor of the paleo-limnological–hydrological conditions in Lake Lisan and the Dead Sea
The isotopic composition and mass balances of sources and sinks of sulfur are used to constrain the limnological–hydrological evolution of the last glacial Lake Lisan (70–14 ka BP) and the Holocene Dead Sea. Lake Lisan deposited large amounts of primary gypsum during discrete episodes of lake level decline. This gypsum, which appears in massive or laminated forms, displays dS values in the rang...

In this research the synthesis of [Co(Salen)(PPh3)(H2O)]4[Fe(CN)6] and [Co(Salophen)(PPh3)(H2O)]4[Fe(CN)6] schiff base complexes was reported. Co3O4/CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by calcination of these complexes at 500, 550 and 600°C. Precursor complexes were identified by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and their thermal behavior was studied via TG/DTA. Nanomagnetic samples were ...
